Statement 8/08

My paintings develop from the impulse to record positive sensory experiences within a context of mystery. This focus inspires me to create worlds where both the personal and commonplace are elevated to a status of reverence and celebration. I treat painting as a universal language, as a magical space whose contents are at first glance familiar but can nevertheless behave most unpredictably.

I am interested in the way we use instinct and how we seek out everyday things that give us hope and strength. I have recently become interested in portraiture and landscape painting - as a part of nature that mirrors the world and, at the same time, as a phenomenon framed in a subjective context. My technique is intentionally hasty; I seek to capture the essence of a subject as if it were the last day on earth, recording only the most vital information. In this endeavor, communication and simplicity are of utmost importance.

I was born in WA and raised in Stanwood/Camano Island area having traveled regularly throughout my life including to Chile where I have family. Apart from art history courses through academies in Madrid and Havana my artistic education has been largely self guided from an early age, and progressed within a solid historical background. In 2001 I received my BA in International Politics from the George Washington University. Thereafter I moved to Seattle, setting up an art studio where I’ve painted since and worked in floral design. The visual language of flower arranging – working with nature’s color, shape and texture- has invariably influenced the formal compositions in my paintings.

I’ve had various solo and group exhibitions in Washington State. I currently divide my studio time between Stanwood and Seattle. New paintings and developments are updated on my blog and website regularly.
